Boston University researchers find that there is a rise in the number of narcissistic traits in the US culture.
In this modern age it seems like the majority are more concerned with fame and fortune while few people seem focused on building character. Boston University researchers find that there is a rise in the number of narcissistic traits in the US culture. Two psychologists argue this in their 2009 book The Narcissism Epidemic: Living in the Age of Entitlement. American Behavioral Sciences have linked narcissism, fame seeking, and mass shootings. Scientific studies have shown there is a link between narcissism, aggression, and violence. Research conducted by the CDC, American Psychiatric Association, Current Directions in Psychological Science, Developmental Psychology, The Journal of Personal and Social Psychology, and many others have found these correlations.
Now this epidemic of fear is stifling our youth making them anxious, depressed and weary before their adult life even begins.
For over 25 years I have been dedicated to rite of passage programs for adolescence in our community. Apparently with the propensity of reality TV shows, the desire to have videos go viral, and the collection of social media followers, we have confused especially our young people about their true heavenly worth. Now this epidemic of fear is stifling our youth making them anxious, depressed and weary before their adult life even begins.
I am the CEO of my own life, but I need a team of advisors to help build my character. A Board of Directors to guide me. That is how I developed My Mothers’ Council.
It has been important to me all my life to feel good about myself, others, and life. Life’s challenges are best faced head on! I am the CEO of my own life, but I need a team of advisors to help build my character. A Board of Directors to guide me. That is how I developed My Mothers’ Council. I sought mentors and role models to help me build the personality traits that I admired in them.
As I confronted trials I looked around me for leadership and empowerment. I found it through Maya Angelou “killing me softly with her words” of pain and liberation. Through the encouragement I found in the faithful service of Mother Teresa and her struggles with her “dark nights of the soul” as I struggle in my healing work as a Spine Pain Physician! I envisioned it through the passion of Joseph Baker helping me discover my mature female sensual self awkwardly struggling through tomboy adolescence. I was emboldened by the persistence and consistency of Madam Marie Curie “breaking the glass ceiling” in science pushing me during struggles in my medical residency and fellowship. I have evolved through the innovation and creativity of Annie Sullivan, the teacher of Helen Keller, as I work with educating and motivating the youth in our community.
“While it takes a Village to raise the child, it takes a Council to raise an adult”
“While it takes a Village to raise the child, it takes a Council to raise an adult” I am a part of our children’s Village. It is important for me to develop the characteristics they can admire. My Mothers’ Council are the 22 women I explore in my book Self-Mothering. These are the personal friends that have hugged me, comforted me, lifted me, and held my hands. These are the powerful historic women that have acted as my beacons in the darkness.
